A North Carolina state legislator wants to arm teachers to protect students from gun-toting "communist democrats" who commit mass shootings at schools.
State Rep. Larry Pittman (R) told fellow lawmakers that he believed “many lives could have been saved” at the school shooting on Wednesday at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Fla. if school officials had been armed.
Pittman, according to the Charlotte News and Observer, had a lot to say about the shooting at a Joint Legislative Emergency Management Oversight Committee meeting on Thursday.
“We have to get over this useless hysteria about guns and allow school personnel to have a chance to defend their lives and those of their students. Many lives could have been saved that were lost before the police got there. I believe government officials are accountable for the number of deaths and injuries being as high as they are in these incidents.”
And while that comment was cause for some concern, it was what he said on Facebook that many find really disturbing.
One of his constituents, a Facebook user named James Johnson posted a picture circulated by conspiracy theorist and famed huckster Alex Jones, incorrectly identifying the shooter as a "communist" and possible member of "ANTIFA."
Johnson later deleted photo after it was proven to be false, but not before Pittman replied that "many" school shooters "turn out to be communist democrats" who murder people so they can "push for gun control so they can more easily take over the country."
Education Secretary Betsy DeVos echoed Pittman's sentiments on Thursday, saying that teachers should be armed in order to stop school shootings.
Pittman, who says that his previous attempts at introducing legislation to arm teachers “was sneered at in a very dismissive manner,” has previously compared President Abraham Lincoln to Adolf Hitler.
